‘How do you want your wife, child to read your eulogy? Allow
them to write it with all sincerity and look at it. Does it portray what you
would like narrated at your funeral?’
1TIMOTHY 4.1-2
‘Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times
some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and
doctrines of devils;’
Let us understand the meaning of some of the key words:
POWER

the face of the waters

God’s word has inherent power to accomplish the purpose God
desires.
It does not need my influence, gimmick, drama or even
manipulation
Isaiah 55.10-11
1.
God’s
word converts the un-believer.
Many words yield conviction and pretence
God’s word is the seed which produces new
life
Rain falls downward, falling down waters
the earth; this is where you and I are.
There is no choice but to earth to receive
the rains
Be wetted by this rain
Thus, it is me to ready myself anytime and
every time to receive the word when it is released.
2.
God’s
word combats sin
When we know and obey God’s word we will be
able to see sin in the light of the truth and be warned of the consequences of
sinning
The consequences of sin are death. Genesis
3.11, Romans 6.23 The wages of sin is death...
Psalm 119.9,11 How can a young man keep his
life pure? By taking heed of the word of God; your word have I hidden in my
heart that I may not sin against you.
3.
God’s
word causes spiritual growth
1John 2.17 ‘And the world passes away and
the lust therefore; but he that does the will of God abides for ever’.
1Peter 2.2 ‘’as new born babies crave the
sincere milk of the word of God, so that you may grow thereby:’’
God
reveals our motives
1John2.18-25
Hebrews 12.13 ‘‘and make straight paths for

be healed’’.
4.

James 1.22-25
2 Corinthians 3.18 ‘But we all, with open
face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the
spirit of the Lord’’.
Colossians3.9-10
‘Lie not to one another, seeing that you have
put off the old man with his deeds; and have put on the new man, who is renewed
in knowledge after the image of him that created him;
THE PURPOSE OF GOD’S WORD
1.
Contains God’s impartial, eternal standard or
truth
Reveals what is right and wrong, Psalm
119.160

every one of thy righteous judgments endures forever’’.
2.
Constitutes a guide for our lives, Psalm119.105
‘’Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a
light unto my path’’.
Provides general and specific guidance
General rules are in the commandments
3.
Comforts, teaches and encourages us, Romans 15.4
‘’For whatsoever things were written
aforetime were written for our learning, that through patience and comfort of
the scriptures, might have hope’’.
4.
Cautions us about true mistakes of the other,
1Corinthians 10.11,12
‘’Now all these happened to them for our
example: and they are written for our
admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come
5.
Comprises a tool against temptation, Mathew
4.4.7
6.

7.
Causes us to be equipped as God’s servant
As a student of the bible I must devote myself to study,
then practice obedience and teaching of God’s word.
Then and only then will I be able to stand out confidently
and pride myself to be a changed man. In whom the power of the word of God is
practical. That for me practicing the word is the norm rather than the
exception. A daily encounter with the word that is practical
